Welcome to Digital Music Class
with Mrs. Ahmad!
Each week I will post different musical activities that follow our state and county standards for music education.
K-2nd grade activities are optional, and should take approximately 10 minutes to complete.
3rd-5th activities are part of the academic learning day. 20 minutes per day should be spent on specials learning and can rotate between music, art, and PE. We recommend choosing one special area per day to focus on.

proudly presents....
The 3rd Grade Spring Recorder Concert!!!
Due to everything going on, we know that we cannot provide the traditional 3rd grade recorder concert to your kids. It truly breaks our hearts as much as it breaks theirs. In light of this, we have decided to try our very best to give the kids the experience of a concert from their homes. We have come up with a solution that we think is the best way to have your kids perform a concert for you, and we think they will love it!
Using technology, we have created a video that shows the kids the sheet music for each of the songs they are to play, and it has their music teachers playing along with them. This way, in order for them to “perform” a concert for you, all you need to do is hit play, then they follow along in the video with us.
There are a few things that you can do to help us and them make it feel more “concert like”. Of course none of these ideas are required, however they are just some suggestions that could help give them an unforgettable experience. Your kids can also help getting these things set up!
1. Have them dress up! There is nothing better than performing a concert in fancy clothes.
2. Create a stage in your home. You can use blankets, chairs, etc.
3. Have your child create a program for the concert. They can decorate it and make it their own.
4. Make it dinner and a show! Let your child serenade you over dinner!
5. Have an outdoor concert!
6. Involve your family from afar. Zoom in grandmother so she can watch your child blow some sweet recorder sounds.
7. Clap wildly in between each song, no matter what. Their smiles will be infectious.
8. Before, during, and/or after the concert, record and take pics of your kids, then post them to our music class Seesaw. This will give everyone the opportunity to see each other in their unique performance settings!

Pitch and Tempo
Pitch is how high or low a sound is. (Not loud and soft....that is dynamics.)
Play "Music Maker"... Select your background. Move the bars up and down to change the pitches of the song. You may also change the tempo by selecting the rabbit (fast) or the snail (slow) at the bottom of the page. Did you notice that the taller the pole is, the lower the pitch and the shorter the pole is, the higher the pitch is? Can you arrange the poles to make them sound like a song? Did you try the slower and faster tempos? Which one did you like the best?

Timbre - Vocal and Instrumental
Timbre is the characteristics of an instrumental or vocal sound.
Vocal Timbre
We can use our voices many different ways. This link is for Bobby McFerrin's song "Don't Worry, Be Happy."
Mr. McFerrin recorded the whole song using only his voice! Once you click the link, experiment by dragging the color boxes into the white boxes one at a time. You will hear each different rhythm and melody that he created with his voice. He recorded each part individually and put them all together to create his song. Try using several different patterns. Please Note: The two Bobby McFerrin links below require the use of flash, so they will work better on a computer rather than a tablet. Some tablets and phones do not support Flash.

Here is a second song by Bobby McFerrin. How are the parts different? How are they the same?

Create your own sounds to perform with one of your favorite songs!
Instrumental Timbre
Instruments have their own special timbre just like our voices do. This link has several orchestral instruments that you can listen to and also read about. How many of these instruments could you identify if you heard them without seeing them?

Listen to each section of the orchestra using the link below. How do the families sound different from each other? How are their timbres different?
