Unit 1 - Rhythm (August - September)
Identify short and long sounds in rhythmic patterns. Transition from long and short sounds to ta ant ti ti sounds while reading rhythms. Clap, move to and play rhythmic patterns that include ta and ti ti. Write four beat rhythmic patterns using ta and ti ti.
Songs: Little Spider, Down in the Meadow, Five Little Chickadees, Bam chi chi bam, Polly Week, Kaeru No Uta, and Little Snail.

Unit 2 - Melody (October - December)
Understand the difference between high and low sounds in music. Transition from the vocabulary of high and low to Sol and Mi. Show Sol and Mi through body signs and hand signs. Write Sol and Mi patterns on worksheets and with manipulatives. Play Sol and Mi patterns on xylophones.
Songs: Bluebird, Andy Pandy and Oliver Twist.

Unit 3 - Movement and Musical Expression (January - February)
Understand the difference between high and low sounds in music.
Move to show fast and slow.
Identify the difference between loud and soft.
Move expressively to varying musical styles.
Dramatize stories.
Play game songs.
Create movements.
Move using props.
Learn circle dances.
Songs: O Ma Washi, Juba, Get on Board, Hey Diddle Diddle, Chippewea, Put Your Finger in the Air, Little Red Wagon, Tap it! Rap it!, Old Blue, Polly Wee, and Clouds.

Unit 4 - Instruments and Musical Form (March - May)
Sort classroom instruments into the basic families of wood, metal, shaker/scraper and membrane.
Create soundscapes to songs and literature using rhythm instruments.
Sing, play instruments and dance to show variations in the musical form of varying musical selections.
Identify echo singing, speech patterns, call & response, and verse & refrain forms in music.
Songs: Hello There, Shuga Bee, Jack Be Nimble, Who Has the Penny, Dinner Music, I Got a Letter This Morning, Rig a Jig Jig, and Going to the Zoo.
