Unit 1 - Rhythm (August - September)
Read rhythms that contain quarter notes (ta), quarter rests (sh), and barred eighth notes (titi). Clap rhythm patterns containing quarter notes, barred eighth notes and quarter rests. Compose simple rhythm patterns.
Songs: Apples Peaches Pears and Plums, Bee Bee Bumblebee, Rain Rain, Viva El Futbol, All My Little Ducklings, Naughty Tabby Cat, Pease Porridge Hot and Bingo.

Unit 2 - Melody (October - December)
Identify and sing high and low sounds. Identify and sing upward and downward melodies. Identify the different voices of men, women and children. Identify high and low environmental sounds. Identify Mi, Sol and La through pictures and on the music staff. Perform Mi, Sol and La using hand signs while singing. Compose an eight beat Solfege composition.

Unit 3 - Movement and Musical Expression (January - February)
Understand the difference between high and low sounds in music.
Move to show fast and slow.
Identify the difference between loud and soft.
Move expressively to varying musical styles.
Dramatize stories.
Play game songs.
Create movements.
Move using props.
Learn circle dances.
Learn line dances.
Songs: Freight Train, Orange Blossom Special, Yellow Butter, Pass the Shoe, Race You Down the Mountain, The Wind Blew East, Bouncing Balls, Popcorn, Andante, The Parade, Stars and Stripes Forever, Surprise Symphony, and The Parade.

Unit 4 - Instruments and Musical Form (March - May)
Identify and sort classroom instruments into three families.
Identify and sort percussion instruments into pitched and non-pitched groups.
Identify the four different families of the orchestra and how you can tell which family an orchestral family belongs to.
Distinguish between sections of a song.
Label the sections of a song.
Change movements to show the changing sections of a song.
Play varying instrumental patterns based on the form of a song.
Songs: Down by the Bay, Mashed Potatoes, Shortnin' Bread, Shoo Turkey, Amefuri, Vesh lanu taish, The Rain Sings a Song, and B A Bay.

1. Recognizes and demonstrates Mi, Sol and La with hand signs in songs and on melodic instruments.
2. Demonstrates upward and downward direction in music.
3. Distinguishes between singing and playing melodic patterns.
4. Sings simple songs by rote with increasing pitch accuracy.
5. Reads, creates, and performs simple accompaniment patterns on instruments.
6. Distinguishes between melody alone and melody with accompaniment.
7. Reads, performs, and notates the following symbols: quarter note, two beamed eighth notes, and quarter rest.
8. Moves to, performs, sings, and plays a steady beat.
9. Distinguishes between long and short sounds.
10. Distinguishes between beat and no beat.
11. Distinguishes between repeated and contrasting sections in music.
12. Identifies and demonstrates awareness of AB, ABA, and verse/refrain.

14. Distinguishes the difference between percussive and melodic instruments.
15. Distinguishes the difference between male, female, and child voices.
